‘Bandits sacked our village, turned our church into a mosque’ – Plateau community leader laments

A community leader from Mushere Chiefdom in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Amos Gyang, has shared a painful account of how armed bandits attacked his village and displaced its residents. Speaking at a charity event organised by the Plateau Unite Foundation in Jos, Gyang said the attackers chased people from their homes, took over the land, and altered key symbols of the community.

According to him, the incident happened in September 2025 when armed men invaded the village without warning. He said more than 10 people were killed during the attack, forcing families to flee for safety. Gyang stressed that the community had lived peacefully with Fulani settlers for years before the violence, making the attack both shocking and devastating.

He further alleged that after driving residents away, the attackers renamed the village and converted the community church into a mosque. Farmlands, livestock, and homes were also taken over, leaving the original inhabitants with nothing to return to. The loss of their ancestral land, he said, remains the most painful part of the experience.

Gyang lamented that many displaced villagers are now living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps under difficult conditions, while others struggle daily just to survive. He appealed to the government for help, saying repeated calls for intervention had gone unanswered, but expressed hope that one day the community would return to their land.
