Sanwolu, others extol Murtala Muhammed

The late General Murtala Ramat Muhammed was commemorated in a solemn ceremony marking 50 years since his passing, attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, family members, government officials, military representatives, and diplomats. The event, held at the General Murtala Muhammed Cenotaph in Ikoyi, served as a reflection on his leadership and enduring impact on Nigeria and Africa.

Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, the late General’s daughter and CEO of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, highlighted her father’s unwavering commitment to service and principled leadership. She described him as a symbol of courage, integrity, and national unity, emphasizing that his legacy continues to inspire both Nigeria and the continent, especially in countries like Angola where his leadership contributed to African independence movements.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised General Muhammed as an extraordinary Pan-Africanist whose decisive and compassionate leadership helped shape Nigeria’s political and administrative landscape. He called on Nigerians to emulate the values of patriotism, integrity, and service demonstrated by the late leader during his brief but impactful tenure.

Major General (Rtd.) Ahmed Taiwo, speaking on behalf of the family of Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo, recounted the late General’s fearless nature, noting how he dismissed warnings about threats to his life while pursuing reforms. The ceremony concluded with calls for current leaders to uphold General Muhammed’s ideals and draw inspiration from his dedication to national unity, discipline, and service.
