Oyo adopts full implementation of FG’s PoA initiative, sets take-off date

Oyo State has officially adopted the Federal Government’s Proof of Address (PoA) initiative and set March 1, 2026, as the launch date for full implementation. The programme is aimed at creating a standardised, verifiable address system to replace informal tools like utility bills, helping to improve identification for both residents and businesses.

In preparation for the rollout, the state government and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Oyo chapter, held a statewide sensitisation programme in Ibadan. Representatives from ministries, departments, agencies, and local governments were trained on the PoA system, including its objectives, implementation process, and importance for governance and service delivery.

The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde Adetunji, described the initiative as key for planning, security, social services, and economic growth. He noted that preparatory training in 2025 has already helped officials understand the system, and full implementation will enhance transparency, citizen trust, and data-driven decision-making across the state.

Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Abiodun Muhammed Fadeyi, praised the initiative for strengthening security through improved identification, while Programme Coordinator Segun Obayando highlighted its wider benefits, including easier access to government and financial services, more accurate population data, and better coordination for development planning. Oyo State is now the first in Nigeria to fully adopt all legal frameworks supporting the PoA project.
