A 65-year-old woman has been rescued after a fire broke out in a residential building in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The incident happened on Friday evening in the Elekuro area, close to a primary healthcare centre. Quick action by operatives of the Oyo State Fire Service helped prevent the situation from becoming more tragic.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said the fire started in the boys’ quarters of an old six-room residential building. According to him, the second room in the quarters was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
Akinwande explained that the fire service team responded swiftly and worked hard to contain the fire, stopping it from spreading to other rooms and the main building. Despite their efforts, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.
The elderly woman, who reportedly inhaled a large amount of smoke, sustained serious injuries during the incident. She was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for proper medical treatment. Authorities praised the firefighters for their timely intervention, which saved lives and reduced further damage.
