UN Secretary-General Guterres Denounces Terrorist Attack in Nigeria That Killed Over 170 in Kwara
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned in the strongest terms the deadly terrorist assault in Kwara State that claimed the lives of more than 170 people.
The attack took place on Tuesday when armed assailants stormed Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area. During the raid, at least 170 residents were killed, dozens were injured, and several others remain missing.
Following the incident, residents accused the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of failing to act on repeated distress calls and security alerts issued months before the attack.
In a statement released on Thursday by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres expressed deep condolences to the victims and reiterated the United Nations’ support for Nigeria in combating terrorism.
“The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and to the people and Government of Nigeria, and wishes those injured a swift recovery,” the statement said.
He also reaffirmed the UN’s solidarity with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, emphasizing the need to ensure accountability.
“The Secretary-General reiterates the United Nations’ solidarity with the Government and people of Nigeria in their efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, and underscores the importance of bringing those responsible to justice,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, several residents told SaharaReporters on Thursday that community members had repeatedly alerted traditional rulers, local government officials, and the state government about the suspicious movement of armed individuals and their presence in nearby forests, but no effective response followed.
Two residents, speaking separately, said youths in Kaiama had raised alarms multiple times after observing unfamiliar armed men camping in surrounding bushes.
“Before the attack, our youths reported several times to the traditional ruler that strange people were gathering in forests close to our villages,” one resident said. “They also informed the local government and the state authorities. Everyone knew, but no one came to protect us.”
Another resident corroborated the claims, stating that appeals to both state and local authorities to deploy security forces and clear the forests were allegedly ignored.
