Senator Abaribe, Others, Counter Akpabio On Results Transmission

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and several other lawmakers have moved to clarify reports that the Senate rejected electronic transmission of election results. Speaking at a press conference, the senators said recent public statements on the issue did not fully reflect what was agreed inside the Senate chambers.

Abaribe explained that the Senate did not approve “transfer of results” as contained in the 2022 Electoral Act. Instead, he said lawmakers agreed on electronic transmission of results, stressing that the difference in wording is important to avoid confusion or misuse of the law.

According to him, both the Senate Electoral Committee and the Ad-hoc Committee reached a clear agreement during a closed executive session. He noted that the closed session was meant to resolve grey areas so that the final decision would be clear, united, and free of disagreement when presented at plenary.

The senator insisted that the Senate wants an Electoral Act that is simple, precise, and impossible to misinterpret. He assured Nigerians that the lawmakers present unanimously supported electronic transmission of election results, adding that clarity and transparency were the main goals of the amendment.
