A political scientist, Akinwunmi Akinfenwa, has stated that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is fully in charge of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state. He made this assertion on Wednesday during an interview on ARISE Television’s Morning Show, where he analysed the balance of political power within the party.
Akinfenwa acknowledged the political strength of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, but stressed that Oyo politics is firmly under Makinde’s control. According to him, Makinde has built a strong political structure in Ibadan and across the state, giving him a solid grip on the PDP at the grassroots level.
He also explained President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments on the Rivers State political crisis, describing them as strategic rather than emotional. Akinfenwa noted that Wike’s influence in Rivers, especially his role in the 2023 elections, makes him a key political figure the President cannot ignore.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Akinfenwa said Tinubu’s approach reflects political reality. He added that while such decisions may be unpopular, they are often unavoidable in politics, where power, influence, and electoral calculations play a major role in shaping alliances and public positions.
