The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said that he does not need the constitution to advise the President of Nigeria or state governors. He explained that speaking up on national issues is part of his responsibility as a traditional ruler and leader of the people.
Sanusi made the statement during an interview on The Morning Brief, a programme aired on Channels Television. He stressed that traditional institutions still have an important role to play in nation-building, especially in guiding leaders and promoting good governance.
According to the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, his authority to offer advice comes from the trust and leadership role given to him by the people he represents. He noted that whenever he believes something is wrong or needs attention, he has the moral duty to speak directly to those in power.
The Emir also spoke about the need for more inclusive governance in Nigeria. He called for greater participation of women in politics and public leadership, saying women have a vital role to play in strengthening democracy and improving decision-making across the country.
