AFCON 2025: Morocco confirm decision to appeal sanctions vs Senegal

Morocco have confirmed they will appeal the sanctions imposed on them following the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Senegal. The Moroccan Football Federation announced on Tuesday that it is unhappy with the fines and match bans handed down by the Confederation of African Football, CAF.

CAF sanctioned both Morocco and Senegal for incidents that occurred during the tense final match, which Senegal won 1-0 after extra time. However, while Senegal have accepted the ruling and will not challenge the decision, Morocco have chosen to contest the penalties imposed on them.

According to CAF’s ruling, the Moroccan Football Federation and national team player Ismael Saibari were jointly fined a total of $415,000. The sanctions followed conduct issues that CAF said breached competition regulations during the final showdown.

One of the incidents highlighted involved ball boys attempting to remove a towel from Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy during the match. CAF stated that the act alone attracted a $200,000 fine for Morocco, adding to the financial and disciplinary measures now being challenged by the Atlas Lions.
