The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on security agencies and relevant authorities to urgently intervene in the abduction of a prospective corps member, Miss Lateefah Binuyo, who was kidnapped in Kogi State while travelling for the NYSC orientation programme. Lawmakers described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, urging swift action to secure her safe return.
Raising the matter during plenary, the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Mrs Omolara Olumegbon, disclosed that the victim, a Mass Communication graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic, was abducted on January 22 while on her way to Taraba State. She revealed that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of N30 million and appealed for improved security arrangements for corps members travelling to their states of deployment.
Members of the Assembly called for collaboration between the Lagos State Government and the Kogi State Government to ensure the victim’s rescue. They also urged the Federal Government and security agencies, including the police and military, to intensify efforts to protect young Nigerians participating in the NYSC scheme. Some lawmakers further suggested a review of NYSC deployment procedures to reduce the risks faced by corps members posted to distant or high-risk areas.
Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, described the incident as heartbreaking, stressing that the safety of corps members should be a top priority. He said the Assembly would write to the Inspector-General of Police and the NYSC leadership to demand urgent action and long-term measures to prevent similar occurrences. The House expressed hope that with coordinated efforts, Miss Binuyo would be rescued safely.
