We never begged for money – Omije Ojumi’s family breaks silence

The family of late gospel singer, Omije Ojumi, has spoken publicly to clear the air over reports surrounding the cancellation of burial plans earlier announced by some of her colleagues. The family urged the public to ignore what it described as misleading stories on social media and allow the singer to be buried with dignity and peace.

Speaking during the service of songs and artistes’ night held in Lagos on Wednesday, Omije Ojumi’s brother-in-law, Mr. Femi Eretan, explained that the family decided to handle the burial on their own after disagreements with some members of the gospel music community. He dismissed claims of internal family conflict, stressing that the family remains united and calm despite the loss.

Eretan said the family initially agreed to a quick burial proposed by some artistes because of the fragile health of the family head and the emotional weight of the moment. However, after further discussions, the family agreed that the late singer, who is survived by a husband and children, deserved a more carefully planned and dignified burial led by her family. He added that attempts to explain this decision to the artistes’ representatives failed, leading to a breakdown in communication.

The family also rejected claims made in a viral video by a self-styled prophet, which alleged that they begged for money to bury Omije Ojumi. Eretan described the claim as false and warned that legal action could follow if no evidence is provided. Despite the controversy, he thanked artistes and well-wishers who supported the family in their own ways and attended the service of songs.
