Lassa Fever kills 17 Nigerians – NCDC

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that 17 people have died from Lassa fever in Nigeria within the first three weeks of 2026. The outbreak affected eight states, including Bauchi, Taraba, Plateau, Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi, Benue, and Nasarawa, with Bauchi accounting for nearly half of all confirmed cases. A total of 93 infections were recorded during this period.

The NCDC stated that the national Case Fatality Rate (CFR) currently stands at 18.1%, slightly lower than the 18.2% recorded during the same period in 2025. Four health workers were also infected in week three, highlighting ongoing occupational risks associated with the disease. Most confirmed cases were reported in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, and Edo States, while the remaining states accounted for 11% of infections.

Data from the report showed that the age group most affected ranged from 21 to 30 years, with a median age of 27.5 years, and a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.6. The NCDC emphasized the importance of early detection, treatment, and proper health-seeking behavior, noting that delayed hospital visits and poor environmental sanitation contribute to the outbreak.

The agency also confirmed that the national Lassa fever multi-partner Incident Management System (IMS) has been activated to support response efforts, including treatment, distribution of medical supplies like Ribavirin, and risk communication at the community level. States are urged to strengthen community engagement and for healthcare workers to maintain vigilance in diagnosing and managing suspected cases.
