Two local government areas in Kwara State, Edu and Ifelodun, have imposed a 24-hour curfew on selected communities to curb rising insecurity linked to banditry and kidnapping. The councils said the decision was taken to support ongoing security operations and to restore safety in affected areas.
In Ifelodun Local Government Area, the curfew covers the entire Oro-ago District and took effect from 6 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. According to the council, all human and vehicular movement is banned during the period as security agencies carry out clearance operations aimed at disrupting criminal activities and protecting residents.
Similarly, Edu Local Government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Gbugbu community, including its popular international market, starting from 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The council explained that the restriction is necessary to allow security forces operate effectively without interference, adding that movement within the area is completely prohibited until further notice.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the curfew is already producing positive results. He noted that the measure would help security agencies track fleeing criminals and expose informants aiding bandits, stressing that the restrictions are temporary and aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
