Defamation: Oyo Assembly indicts APC lawmaker, rejects apology

The Oyo State House of Assembly has formally indicted an APC lawmaker for alleged defamation, rejecting the lawmaker’s apology. The development came after the legislator was accused of making statements considered damaging to the reputation of a colleague and the integrity of the Assembly.

During proceedings, the Speaker of the Assembly emphasized that members must uphold decorum and respect in both public and private discourse. The lawmaker’s apology was described as insufficient to mitigate the gravity of the offense.

The Assembly stressed that defamation undermines the collective credibility of lawmakers and warned that similar actions by any member in the future would attract strict sanctions. The matter has been referred to the House Ethics Committee for further investigation and recommendations.

This incident highlights the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining accountability and discipline among its members while protecting the reputation of both individuals and the institution.
