Court adjourns human rights lawyer’s case to February 4

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has adjourned the case involving human rights lawyer, Victor Giwa, and his co-defendant, Bukola Ibitade, to February 4, 2026. The matter was filed by the Nigeria Police Force over allegations of forgery involving the letterhead of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Awa Kalu. Proceedings on Monday were halted following arguments over legal representation and readiness to proceed.

During the hearing, prosecution counsel, Theophilous Silas, informed the court that the business of the day was to move a motion seeking the revocation of Giwa’s bail. He asked the court for permission to proceed with the motion. However, Giwa’s new lawyer, Mr. Farooq Akanbi, objected, explaining that his firm had only been briefed a day earlier and needed time to study the case files and motions already before the court.

Akanbi told the court that Ahmed Raji, SAN, who was expected to personally handle the matter, was unavailable due to another engagement. He therefore requested a short adjournment to properly prepare the defence. Counsel to the second defendant, Ogbu Aboje, supported the request, stating that the delay was not deliberately caused by the defendants and that Bukola Ibitade did not oppose a brief adjournment.

The police are prosecuting Giwa and Ibitade for allegedly forging the letterhead of Chief Awa Kalu. However, Kalu has denied making any complaint against the defendants. In a letter dated May 30, 2025, addressed to the Inspector General of Police, he clarified that he neither accused Giwa of forgery nor reported him to the police. Despite this denial, the prosecution has continued with the case, which will now resume in February.
