Russia has mocked the European Union following its decision to impose a total ban on Russian gas imports, describing the move as a loss of Europe’s independence. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said the decision showed that the EU had surrendered its freedom, insisting that European leaders were now acting under external pressure rather than their own interests.
Zakharova, speaking on Russian television, questioned whether European countries were “willing vassals or unhappy slaves,” but argued that either way, they had given up control over their energy future. Her comments came after the Council of the European Union formally adopted new rules to phase out all Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
Under the regulation, the ban will begin in six weeks, with existing contracts allowed a transition period. A full stop to LNG imports will take effect in January 2027, while pipeline gas imports will end by September 2027. The EU says the policy is aimed at cutting dependence on Russian energy and strengthening monitoring, diversification and long-term energy security. Heavy penalties have also been outlined for violations, including multi-million-euro fines for individuals and companies.
EU member states have been asked to submit national plans by March 2026 on how they intend to replace Russian gas supplies. While some leaders, such as Cyprus Energy Minister Michael Damianos, praised the move as a step toward an independent Energy Union, the bloc admits the transition carries risks. Russian gas still makes up about 13 percent of EU imports, leaving Europe exposed to potential supply and trade challenges as the ban takes shape.
