The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Wing, has instructed all primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to fully participate in the ongoing strike action. The strike, led by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), began on Monday, January 26, 2026, following a call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for its affiliate unions in the FCT to intensify industrial action over unresolved welfare issues.
In a communiqué signed by the NUT FCT Chairman, Abdullahi Shafas, Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union said teachers are expected to stay away from classrooms with immediate effect. Although the NUT initially had concerns about the coordination of the JUAC-led strike, it said the NLC’s directive made a united front necessary to push workers’ demands forward.
The union also directed teachers within Abuja city centre and nearby areas to gather at the National Industrial Court (NIC), Gimbiya Street, Area 11, by 7:00 a.m. The assembly, according to the communiqué, is meant to show solidarity during the court hearing of a case filed against JUAC, as well as demonstrate teachers’ resolve in the ongoing struggle.
NUT reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue with authorities, stressing that negotiations would continue until all outstanding issues affecting teachers are resolved. The union urged members to remain united and steadfast, assuring them that updates would be communicated as events unfold. The strike follows an earlier indefinite action by workers under the FCT Administration (FCTA), who have been protesting unresolved welfare and working condition concerns.
