Transfer: ‘He’s irreplaceable’ – Manager cries out as ex-Super Eagles captain, Troost-Ekong leaves club

Al-Kholood manager, Des Buckingham, has showered praises on former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following his departure from the club. The coach described the Nigerian defender as a special figure whose influence went far beyond matchdays, stressing that his exit would leave a big gap in the team.

Troost-Ekong, who joined Al-Kholood from Greek side PAOK in the summer of 2024, completed a move to Qatari outfit Al Ahli SC during the January transfer window. Reacting to the transfer, Buckingham admitted that while another player may come in to fill the defensive role, Ekong’s leadership qualities cannot easily be replaced.

According to the Al-Kholood boss, Troost-Ekong was the best captain he has worked with at the club. He explained that the former Udinese and Watford defender played a major role in shaping the team’s culture, helping players stay united, and supporting him personally as he settled into his role as manager.

Buckingham added that Ekong’s contribution helped Al-Kholood maintain their status in the Saudi Pro League. He noted that the defender’s guidance, professionalism, and presence in the dressing room would be missed, insisting that his impact on the club will remain long after his departure.
