Nigerian govt reveals reason behind delay in Kano–Katsina dual carriageway

The Federal Government has explained why work on Section 2 of the Kano–Katsina dual carriageway has been slow. According to the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement (North-West), Abdullahi Tanko-Yakasai, the delay is mainly due to unresolved compensation claims for farmlands and houses affected by the project.

Tanko-Yakasai spoke during an inspection of the road project at Gidan-Mutum Daya in Katsina State. He said the 157-kilometre road, which was awarded under a previous administration, has still recorded visible progress despite the compensation challenges. He added that engineers from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and COREN joined the inspection and were satisfied with the quality of work being done.

He disclosed that the project is currently about 27 per cent completed, noting that compensation remains the biggest obstacle. According to him, the road is very important because it connects Kano, a major commercial centre, with Katsina, and will boost trade and economic activities once completed.

Tanko-Yakasai also explained that new government policies now place compensation payments under the responsibility of state governments, which has affected older projects. He expressed confidence that discussions between the Minister of Works and the Katsina State Government would soon resolve the issue. The Federal Controller of Works, Muhammed Idris, also said better funding under the current administration has improved work see progress, and expressed optimism that the project will be completed once compensation matters are settled.
