Strike: JOHESU storms FMC

Members of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) on Thursday visited the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, to enforce full compliance with the ongoing nationwide strike. Led by union officials, the health workers moved around offices within the hospital to ensure that no member was on duty in defiance of the industrial action.

The monitoring team, made up of officials from the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) and the National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), insisted that the strike would continue until the government meets their demands. The visit followed a “no work, no pay” directive issued by the Federal Ministry of Health to heads of federal hospitals, effective January 2026.

During the exercise, striking workers displayed placards with messages such as “No justice, no retreat” and “CONHESS adjustment is sacrosanct.” Speaking at the facility, Abia State Chairman of NUAHP, Mr Chibueze Oparaocha, said the unions were carrying out a statutory responsibility to ensure total compliance, stressing that due process was followed before the strike began.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of MHWUN at FMC Umuahia, Mrs Commy Okonkwo, expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance among workers. She thanked members for their solidarity but warned against sabotage, saying the union would remain firm until their demands are addressed. She added that the strong turnout showed workers’ commitment and hoped the government would respond promptly.
