Kajuru: CAN reacts as Police make U-turn on mass abduction of worshipers after denial

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has responded to the Nigeria Police Force’s recent confirmation of the mass abduction of nearly 170 worshippers in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna State. CAN expressed concern over the initial dismissal of the incident, saying it created confusion, heightened fear, and questioned the credibility of victims, families, and eyewitnesses. Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President, emphasized that sensitive incidents involving human lives require careful, empathetic, and accurate public communication.

While acknowledging the challenges in verifying security incidents in remote areas, CAN stressed that caution should not appear as denial or indifference. The organization commended the Inspector-General of Police for deploying operational and intelligence resources to Kajuru, but called for more disciplined and people-focused communication in future crises. CAN urged security agencies to improve verification processes and take reports from communities seriously to maintain public trust.

The apex Christian body also appealed for the immediate and safe release of all abducted worshippers. CAN called on governments at all levels to urgently address insecurity in Kaduna and across the country, noting that repeated attacks disrupt worship, endanger lives, and erode public confidence. The organization highlighted the importance of protecting victims, respecting genuine distress calls, and avoiding both dismissive and sensational reporting.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity, pledging to continue standing with affected communities. The statement concluded by urging constructive engagement with authorities to ensure lasting security and accountability while advocating for the safety of all citizens.
