FCTA evacuates 607 beggars, mentally challenged off Abuja streets

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has evacuated no fewer than 607 beggars and mentally challenged persons from major streets of Abuja. The exercise was carried out as part of efforts to improve public safety, restore order, and enhance the image of the nation’s capital.

Officials explained that the operation targeted areas with heavy human traffic, where street begging and the presence of vulnerable persons had become a growing concern. Many of those evacuated were found sleeping under bridges, on road medians, and around busy junctions across the city.

According to the FCTA, the affected individuals were moved to designated shelters where they would receive proper care, medical attention, and rehabilitation. Authorities also noted that some of the evacuees would be reunited with their families, while others would be handed over to relevant state governments.

The FCTA stressed that the exercise was not meant to punish anyone but to protect both residents and the vulnerable people themselves. Officials urged the public to support government efforts by discouraging street begging and reporting cases of abuse or neglect to appropriate agencies.
