The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, has said that education remains a major priority for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. She explained that the president personally showed interest in resolving long-standing issues between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, the minister revealed that President Tinubu asked the education ministry what was needed to successfully reach an agreement with ASUU. According to her, after being briefed on the negotiations and proposed terms, the president approved the process and gave full support for the agreement.
Prof. Ahmad noted that the Memorandum of Understanding signed with ASUU was not done without proper consultation. She said the president was fully informed before the agreement was finalised and also approved the inclusion of the negotiated terms in the national budget, depending on the level of work already completed.
The minister added that resolving issues in the education sector requires strong political will and commitment. She stressed that when a government truly prioritises education, it can negotiate responsibly and follow through with implementation, which she said reflects President Tinubu’s passion for improving Nigeria’s education system.
