Lagos: Six worshippers crushed as sand-laden truck crashes into church in Epe

Tragedy struck in Epe, Lagos State, after a truck loaded with sand lost control and crashed into a church building, killing six worshippers and injuring several others. The incident happened at a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) branch along Hospital Road on Monday evening, shortly after the church had finished its service. Some worshippers were still inside the building when the truck suddenly rammed into the structure.

Eyewitnesses said the truck was moving downhill toward a nearby roundabout when the driver discovered that the brakes had failed. In an effort to avoid hitting pedestrians and other vehicles at the junction, the driver reportedly swerved off the road, but the vehicle ended up crashing into the church instead. Residents said the driver was honking and shouting to warn people moments before the impact.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene to rescue trapped victims and provide help to the injured. Some worshippers were pinned under the truck and sand, and rescuers worked together with residents to free them. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the bodies of those who died were moved to the morgue.

The Lagos State Police confirmed that six people lost their lives in the crash and said the truck involved was not registered. The driver reportedly fled the scene after the accident, and the police have launched an investigation to locate him and determine the exact cause of the crash. Authorities also urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition to prevent similar tragedies.
