The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a 40 percent salary increase and enhanced allowances for university lecturers. The agreement was unveiled during a formal ceremony attended by top education officials.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, explained that the 40 percent increment would be reflected in the consolidated academic tools allowance. This allowance is designed to cover essential academic needs, including journal publication, conference participation, internet access, society membership fees, and book allowances.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the revised allowances aim to support effective teaching, research, and international academic competitiveness. The head academic allowance now includes structured provisions for postgraduate support, fieldwork, clinical duties, examination moderation, and leadership roles within universities.
The Minister added that the structured allowances promote productivity, fairness, and accountability, ensuring that lecturers are adequately compensated for their responsibilities and contributions to the tertiary education system. ASUU leaders expressed satisfaction with the agreement, describing it as a major step towards improving lecturers’ welfare.
