Prison decongestion: Lagos Chief Justice releases 18 inmates, deports two Chadians

The Chief Judge of Lagos State has ordered the release of 18 inmates and the deportation of two Chadian nationals as part of ongoing efforts to decongest correctional facilities in the state. The move followed a routine jail delivery exercise aimed at reducing overcrowding and ensuring that inmates are not held unlawfully or for excessively long periods.

The exercise involved a review of cases of inmates who had spent long periods awaiting trial, those with minor offences, or those whose files could not be properly traced. After careful consideration, the court approved the release of eligible inmates, while the two foreign nationals were handed over to immigration authorities for deportation.

Judicial officials said the exercise reflects the judiciary’s commitment to protecting human rights and promoting access to justice. Overcrowded prisons, they noted, create serious challenges for rehabilitation, healthcare, and security, making regular prison reviews necessary to uphold the rule of law.

The Lagos State Government pledged to continue working with the judiciary, correctional services, and law enforcement agencies to ensure that detention facilities are humane and lawful. Authorities also encouraged faster prosecution of cases and the use of non-custodial measures to further ease pressure on correctional centres.
