The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged universities and other higher institutions to strictly follow the established admission guidelines. The board warned that admitting lower-ranked candidates while bypassing higher-ranked ones is unacceptable and must be corrected immediately.
JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, emphasized that university admissions operate under a three-tier policy: Merit, Catchment Area, and Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS). Each tier prioritizes candidates according to their scores, with higher-ranked students selected before others.
The board also dismissed recent allegations suggesting that some candidates were unfairly denied admission. Investigations revealed that in the cited case at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), higher-ranked candidates were still ahead on the admission list, and the candidate in question had not been disadvantaged.
JAMB reiterated its commitment to fairness and transparency in the admission process. The board warned institutions against violating these rules and urged them to ensure that all selections strictly reflect candidates’ rankings and the board’s guidelines.
