Group kicks against hoisting of APC flag in Ibom plaza

A civic group in Akwa Ibom State has strongly opposed the hoisting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag at the popular Ibom Plaza in Uyo, describing the action as inappropriate and politically provocative. The group said the plaza is a public space meant for unity and social activities, not for partisan political displays.

In a statement issued on Monday, the group warned that turning public landmarks into political symbols could fuel tension and divide residents along party lines. They argued that Ibom Plaza belongs to all citizens regardless of political affiliation and should remain neutral at all times.

The group called on the state government and relevant authorities to immediately remove the flag and prevent similar actions in the future. They stressed that respecting shared public spaces is important for peaceful coexistence, especially as political activities gradually increase ahead of future elections.

Meanwhile, political observers say the incident reflects rising political awareness and sensitivity in the state. They urged political parties to show restraint and focus on issue-based engagement rather than symbolic actions that could trigger unnecessary controversy or unrest.
