Lagos govt replies Tacha, justifies arrest of child beggars

The Lagos State Government has explained why it is arresting child beggars on major roads across the state. This comes after reality TV star Tacha criticised the policy online, saying it punishes poor children instead of solving poverty. The debate started when a video showing a young child being picked up by environmental officials was shared by the state government. The clip caused mixed reactions, with many people questioning the government’s approach.

Tacha argued that arresting children does not solve the real problems behind street begging, such as poverty, broken homes and lack of support. She suggested that instead of arrests, the government should create more boarding vocational centres where children can learn useful skills like tailoring, photography and shoemaking. According to her, helping children gain skills would give them a better future and reduce begging naturally.

However, the state government said its actions are based on law and safety, not emotions. The Commissioner for the Environment said allowing children to run on busy highways in the name of compassion is dangerous and irresponsible. He added that Lagos already offers free education, pays school exam fees and runs technical and vocational centres for youths who want to learn trades.

The government also explained that children picked up during these exercises are recorded and handled carefully. Some are reunited with their parents, while others are enrolled in training programmes through the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. The commissioner urged critics to work with the government instead of only posting online, saying real change requires cooperation and long-term solutions.
