Iran shuts down internet, disables phone lines as protest spreads

Iran has shut down internet access and disrupted phone services across the country as protests over rising living costs and economic hardship continue to grow. The blackout, first noticed late Thursday, is believed to be a government move to limit communication among protesters and reduce the flow of information to the outside world.

Reports from rights groups say the protests have spread to all 31 provinces, with large crowds gathering in cities such as Tehran, Kermanshah, Abadan and Shiraz. Shops were closed in many Kurdish areas after political groups called for a strike, while videos online showed people chanting, blocking roads and openly challenging government authority.

Human rights organisations say the response from security forces has become more forceful. Dozens of protesters have reportedly been killed, including children, while many more have been injured or arrested. Rights monitors warn that the level of violence is increasing daily and that access to independent information is becoming more limited due to the shutdown.

Despite the restrictions, demonstrations have continued into the night in several locations, showing that public anger remains strong. Observers say the situation is now one of the most serious challenges facing Iran’s leadership in recent years, as economic pressure, political frustration and public resistance collide.
