Bashir Ahmad happy as Buratai sues Ali-Keffi for N1bn over defamation

Presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has expressed satisfaction following the news that former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), filed a N1 billion defamation suit against politician Ali-Keffi. The lawsuit arises from alleged false statements made by Ali-Keffi that Buratai claims harmed his reputation.

The legal action, filed in a Federal High Court, seeks compensation for damages and a public apology from Ali-Keffi. Bashir Ahmad, who is close to the presidential circle, welcomed the suit, noting that accountability for misinformation is important for public discourse.

Buratai’s lawyers argued that the alleged defamation has negatively impacted his public image and could affect his engagements in both political and professional circles. The court proceedings are expected to examine the claims and assess whether Ali-Keffi’s statements meet the threshold for defamation under Nigerian law.

Observers have highlighted the case as a reminder that public figures must exercise caution in making statements about others, emphasizing the growing importance of legal recourse in matters of reputational damage. The suit has attracted national attention, with many awaiting developments in the case.
