The UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Britain supported a United States mission to seize a Russian-flagged oil tanker at sea. The move, according to UK officials, was part of efforts to enforce international sanctions and prevent the illegal transportation of restricted oil products. The operation took place in international waters and was coordinated between the two allies.
A Defence Ministry spokesperson said the support provided by the UK was mainly in the area of intelligence sharing, surveillance, and maritime coordination. The official explained that the tanker was suspected of helping Russia bypass sanctions placed on its energy exports following the war in Ukraine. The aim, they said, was to block illegal oil trading that could fund military activities.
The UK government stressed that the action was lawful and in line with international maritime and sanctions laws. Officials also said such cooperation between Western allies is necessary to maintain global security and prevent the misuse of shipping routes for unlawful economic activities.
Russia has not officially responded to the development, but analysts believe the incident could further strain relations between Moscow and Western nations. Experts warn that more similar actions could follow as the US and its partners increase pressure on Russia’s oil trade networks.
