Over 2,000 maize farmers in Kaduna State have appealed to the Federal Government for urgent help after suffering massive losses during the 2025 farming season. The farmers said the sharp fall in maize prices, combined with the rising cost of fertiliser and other inputs, left many of them unable to recover their expenses. They warned that without support, many farmers may not return to their farms in 2026.
The farmers explained that fertiliser prices more than doubled in 2025, while the market price of maize dropped sharply at harvest time. This made it impossible for them to sell their produce at a profit. As a result, many farmers recorded heavy losses and struggled to repay loans and production costs. The situation, they said, threatens food supply and rural livelihoods.
In a petition sent to top government officials, including the Ministry of Agriculture and the Central Bank of Nigeria, the farmers requested free or heavily subsidised fertiliser and other inputs for the 2026 season. They also proposed to repay the government with maize after harvest if assistance is provided. According to them, this support would help restore confidence in farming and keep grain production stable.
The farmers warned that if no action is taken, grain production could fall sharply next year, making food more expensive for Nigerians. They said the crisis is not limited to Kaduna State but affects many grain farmers across the country. The group urged the government to act quickly to protect food security and prevent more farmers from leaving agriculture.
