Why there’s increase in terrorism, banditry – Peterside

Former presidential aide and political analyst, Peterside, has explained why terrorism and banditry are increasing across Nigeria. According to him, the growing violence is not accidental but the result of years of weak security coordination, poor intelligence sharing, and slow response to early warning signs of threats in vulnerable communities.

Peterside said unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunities have made it easy for criminal groups and extremist networks to recruit young people. He noted that when citizens feel abandoned by the state and cannot meet basic needs, they become more vulnerable to manipulation by violent groups promising money, protection, or purpose.

He also blamed corruption and political interference for weakening Nigeria’s security institutions. Peterside argued that when security agencies are underfunded, poorly motivated, or influenced by politics, criminals gain confidence and operate more freely, leading to more attacks and kidnappings.

Peterside urged the government to focus on long-term solutions rather than only military responses. He called for investment in education, job creation, community policing, and intelligence-driven security operations, saying only a combination of economic development and strong institutions can reduce terrorism and banditry sustainably.
