Waste and scrap vendors in Ogun State staged a protest on Monday, alleging extortion by local authorities. The vendors claimed that they were being forced to pay arbitrary fees while carrying out their daily businesses, which they say is affecting their livelihoods.
The protest took place at major scrap markets in the state, with vendors carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding an end to the harassment. They called on the Ogun State government to investigate the alleged extortion and ensure fair treatment for all traders.
Officials from the affected local government areas have yet to comment on the allegations. However, the vendors warned that they would continue to protest until their grievances were addressed and a transparent system for market operations was implemented.
The protest highlights ongoing concerns about small businesses and informal sector workers in Ogun State, who say they often face financial pressures from local authorities. Many vendors are urging state officials to create an enabling environment that supports their businesses rather than hinders them.
