Sokoto schools resume second term amid security concerns

Public primary and junior secondary schools in Sokoto State resumed for the second term on Monday, January 5, 2026, despite ongoing security challenges in some areas. The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) confirmed that preparations had been made to ensure a smooth return for pupils after the first-term holiday ended on January 4.

SUBEB Executive Chairman, Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to cooperate in ensuring students return to school as scheduled. He also directed education officials to carry out intensive monitoring and supervision to maintain academic standards during the resumption.

Three special monitoring teams, each led by a permanent board member, were deployed across the state’s three senatorial zones to assess school readiness and resumption compliance. Tambuwal emphasized that safety and orderly conduct in schools remain a top priority.

The board also warned contractors involved in school projects, such as classroom construction and furniture supply, to complete their work promptly. SUBEB reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe access to education and protecting the academic future of children in Sokoto State.
