Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has criticised the Federal Government for insisting on implementing the new tax law from January 1. He described the decision as disrespectful to Nigerians and a violation of the rule of law, especially as the law is still being debated and challenged in some quarters.
Adeyanju said that forcing the policy on citizens without proper consultation and clarity would create confusion and hardship for businesses and ordinary people. He argued that government policies should be introduced in a transparent way that allows citizens and institutions enough time to understand and prepare for the changes.
According to him, good governance requires that laws are implemented only after all legal processes are completed and the public is properly informed. He warned that rushing sensitive policies could damage public trust and worsen the already tense relationship between citizens and the government.
Adeyanju therefore called on President Bola Tinubu and relevant agencies to suspend the January 1 rollout and engage more with stakeholders. He urged the government to respect due process, follow the law, and put the welfare of Nigerians above political interests.
