Gombe Mosques, Churches Resist Prepaid Billing – Jos DISCO

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) has expressed concern over the refusal by some churches, mosques, and business operators in Gombe State to accept the installation of prepaid electricity meters. The company says the resistance is largely being encouraged by messages circulating on social media and is leading to serious financial losses for the power provider.

Speaking on the issue, JEDC’s Head of Corporate Services, Musa Abdullahi, said it was surprising that religious institutions, which teach honesty and fairness, would oppose a system designed to promote transparency in billing. He explained that prepaid meters simply measure actual electricity usage and help prevent disputes over estimated bills.

Abdullahi added that JEDC does not treat customers differently based on religion or business type. According to him, worship centres consume large amounts of power due to lighting, sound systems, cooling, and other equipment, and therefore fall under high-demand customers who need accurate metering.

He revealed that the company loses hundreds of millions of naira every month because electricity supplied is far more than what is paid for. He urged all customers, including churches, mosques, and small businesses, to support prepaid metering so the electricity system can remain fair, transparent, and sustainable.
