Nick Donnelly, a foreign affairs commentator, has called on Nigerian authorities to arrest Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi following recent US airstrikes on terrorist camps in parts of Northern Nigeria. Donnelly said the strikes show that terrorist groups are still active and dangerous, and that individuals who openly engage with or defend them should be investigated and held accountable.
He accused Sheikh Gumi of making statements in the past that appeared to justify or sympathize with armed groups, arguing that such comments could encourage insecurity. According to Donnelly, Nigeria must take stronger action against anyone seen as enabling violence, whether directly or indirectly.
Donnelly also said the US airstrikes, ordered by former President Donald Trump, reflect growing international concern about terrorism in Nigeria. He urged the Nigerian government to show seriousness by dealing firmly with both the fighters and those who allegedly support or excuse them.
He added that arresting and questioning Gumi would send a strong signal that Nigeria will no longer tolerate any form of sympathy for terrorism. Donnelly stressed that peace can only return when all sides promoting or excusing violence are confronted within the law.
