Israel declares Somaliland independent, sovereign state

Israel has officially declared Somaliland an independent and sovereign state, becoming one of the few countries to formally recognise the self-declared republic in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 but has not been widely recognised by the international community. Israel’s move is therefore seen as a major diplomatic development for the region.

The recognition means Israel now views Somaliland as a separate nation with the right to manage its own government, borders, and foreign relations. Supporters of Somaliland say it has built stable institutions and maintained peace for years, which they believe justifies its claim to independence.

However, the decision has sparked reactions from Somalia and other African states who still consider Somaliland part of Somalia’s territory. Critics fear that recognising breakaway regions could encourage separatist movements and increase political tension across Africa.

Despite the controversy, Somaliland leaders have welcomed Israel’s decision, describing it as a step toward international acceptance. They hope the move will encourage other countries to follow and open the door to more investment, trade, and diplomatic ties.
