Veteran journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has spoken out in defence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that long-standing allegations of corruption against him lack substance. According to Momodu, if there was any solid evidence of wrongdoing, past Nigerian presidents would not have hesitated to prosecute Atiku.
Momodu argued that Atiku has remained active in national politics for decades, serving under different administrations with varying political interests. He noted that former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and the current President, Bola Tinubu, all had the authority and opportunity to take legal action against Atiku if he was truly guilty of corruption.
He explained that Nigerian politics is often ruthless, especially among rivals, and it would be unrealistic to believe that successive governments would ignore serious evidence against a prominent opposition figure. According to him, the continued absence of prosecution suggests that the allegations are more political than factual.
Momodu urged Nigerians to separate political propaganda from verifiable facts, stressing that democracy thrives on fairness and truth. He added that leaders should be judged based on proven actions and records, not repeated accusations that have never been tested or upheld in court.
