Super Eagles head coach, Éric Chelle, has spoken openly about the absence of three Nigerian players from the squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. According to the coach, the decision was not taken lightly, as every player considered has contributed to the team’s journey so far. He explained that the final list was shaped by current fitness levels, form, and tactical needs.

Chelle noted that injuries and recovery timelines played a major role in the selection process. Some players, he said, were not fully fit to cope with the demands of a high-intensity tournament like AFCON. Rather than risk worsening their conditions, the technical crew agreed it was better to allow them time to recover properly.

The coach also highlighted competition for places as another factor. With many quality players available, difficult choices had to be made to balance experience, youth, and versatility. Chelle stressed that those left out are still important to the national team and could be recalled in future matches once circumstances change.
