Nigeria Has Moved From Padded Budgets To Forged Laws’

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised serious concerns about Nigeria’s democratic process, saying the country has shifted from padded budgets to what he described as “forged laws.” He made the remark while reacting to recent controversies surrounding the passage and handling of key legislative documents.

Obi stated that padding of budgets, which was once a major national concern, now appears minor compared to allegations that laws are being altered or manipulated after being passed. According to him, such practices weaken democratic institutions and reduce public trust in governance.

He warned that democracy cannot survive when due process is ignored, stressing that laws must reflect what lawmakers genuinely debate and approve. Obi argued that any form of legislative manipulation undermines accountability and encourages corruption at the highest levels.

The former Anambra State governor called on Nigerians to stay alert and demand transparency from both the executive and legislative arms of government. He added that strong institutions, not individuals, remain the backbone of any functional democracy.
