Nigerian 2026 budget: Akpabio defends legislature, executive collaboration, cites global history

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the close working relationship between the National Assembly and the Executive during the consideration of Nigeria’s 2026 budget. He said cooperation between both arms of government is not a weakness but a standard democratic practice aimed at ensuring effective governance and national development.

Akpabio explained that budgeting is a shared constitutional responsibility, stressing that lawmakers are expected to engage constructively with the Executive to fine-tune policies and allocations. According to him, disagreements may occur, but dialogue and collaboration help produce a budget that reflects national priorities and public interest.

Citing examples from advanced democracies around the world, the Senate President noted that successful nations often rely on cooperation between government institutions to achieve economic stability and growth. He argued that constant hostility between the legislature and executive could slow development and harm citizens who depend on timely budget implementation.

He therefore urged Nigerians to view the 2026 budget process as a collective effort to strengthen the economy and improve living standards. Akpabio maintained that transparency, accountability, and mutual respect would continue to guide the National Assembly’s engagement with the Executive as the country pursues sustainable growth.
