AFCON now to be played every four years

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will now be played every four years instead of the previous two-year cycle. The change aims to give teams more time to prepare and improve the quality of the tournament.

CAF officials stated that the decision is designed to align AFCON with other major international football tournaments and to reduce congestion in the football calendar. They believe the move will also enhance player welfare and boost competitiveness.

Football fans and stakeholders across Africa have reacted positively to the announcement, noting that the new schedule allows national teams more preparation time and reduces conflicts with club commitments. Some have highlighted that this could improve performance and overall tournament standards.

The first edition under the new four-year cycle is expected to take place in 2027, with preparations already underway. CAF has assured that this change will maintain the prestige and excitement of Africa’s premier football competition.
