Tinubu to present 2026 budget without accounting for 2025 fiscal year – BudgIT

Budget transparency group, BudgIT, has raised concerns over plans by President Bola Tinubu to present the 2026 federal budget without providing a full and detailed account of the 2025 fiscal year. The organisation said this approach could weaken accountability and reduce public trust in the budgeting process.

According to BudgIT, presenting a new budget without properly reviewing the previous year’s performance makes it difficult to measure progress, identify gaps, or assess how public funds were used. The group stressed that fiscal responsibility requires government to clearly show how earlier budgets were implemented before proposing new spending plans.

The civic organisation also warned that skipping a comprehensive 2025 fiscal report could affect effective planning and policy decisions. It noted that lawmakers, civil society groups, and citizens rely on accurate financial records to evaluate government performance and make informed contributions to national discussions.

BudgIT therefore urged the federal government to release a complete breakdown of the 2025 budget implementation before moving ahead with the 2026 proposal. It added that openness, accountability, and adherence to due process are key to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and improving public confidence in governance.
