The Ogun State Government has announced plans to increase allowances for teachers posted to rural communities across the state. The move is aimed at encouraging educators to accept and remain in postings to hard-to-reach areas, where schools often face shortages of qualified teachers.
According to government officials, the proposed boost in rural teachers’ allowance is part of broader efforts to improve the quality of education at the grassroots. Authorities noted that many rural schools struggle due to poor motivation, limited infrastructure, and the reluctance of teachers to work far from urban centres.
The state government said the incentive would serve as a motivation tool, help reduce teacher turnover, and ensure that children in rural areas have better access to quality education. Officials added that the policy aligns with the administration’s commitment to fairness and inclusive development in the education sector.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the plan, describing it as a step in the right direction. They urged the government to also address other challenges facing rural schools, including learning materials, accommodation, and access to basic amenities, to make teaching in such areas more attractive and sustainable.
