A legal practitioner has criticised a recent Supreme Court ruling on emergency rule, saying it has given the Federal Government too much freedom and created uncertainty in the country’s constitutional process. According to the lawyer, the judgment failed to clearly define limits, which could encourage abuse of power.
He explained that emergency rule is meant to be used only in extreme situations, but the court’s decision may weaken checks and balances. The lawyer warned that without clear guidelines, federal authorities could step into state matters in ways that undermine democracy and the rule of law.
The legal expert also noted that the ruling has raised questions among citizens and state governments about how emergency powers should be applied. He stressed that courts are expected to give clarity, not create confusion, especially on sensitive constitutional issues.
He called on lawmakers to urgently review existing laws on emergency rule to prevent future misuse. According to him, strong legal safeguards are needed to protect people’s mandate and ensure that emergency powers do not override democratic principles.
