Defection of govs to APC embarrassing, democracy threatened – Forum

A political forum has criticised the recent wave of state governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the trend as embarrassing and dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy. According to the group, these defections show that many leaders prioritise personal interests over the people who elected them. The forum added that such actions weaken the country’s political stability.

They argued that when governors switch parties suddenly, they break the trust between them and the voters. Many citizens, the forum said, cast their votes based on party ideology and campaign promises. Defecting after winning an election makes voters feel betrayed and undermines the essence of democratic choice.

The group also warned that mass defections could create an uneven political space where one party becomes too powerful. This, they said, may reduce healthy competition and weaken checks and balances in government. They urged political actors to respect the mandate given to them instead of moving from party to party for personal gain.

The forum called on the National Assembly and electoral bodies to introduce stronger laws that discourage elected officials from switching parties mid-term. They insisted that protecting democracy requires leaders who value public trust and remain committed to the platforms on which they were elected.
