Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has praised members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for their steady contribution to nation-building. He said the programme has remained one of Nigeria’s strongest tools for unity and development since its creation. According to him, corps members continue to play important roles in education, healthcare, agriculture, and community service across the country.
Gowon noted that despite challenges, young Nigerians serving under the NYSC have shown commitment and resilience. He explained that corps members often work in difficult environments but still make positive impact on the communities they serve. He encouraged them to stay focused and continue supporting national growth through hard work and discipline.
He also appealed to government at all levels to keep investing in the NYSC scheme. Gowon stressed that improving the welfare and safety of corps members will help them perform better and contribute more effectively. He added that the nation must continue to appreciate the energy, creativity, and unity the young people bring to their service year.
The elder statesman reminded Nigerians that the NYSC was created to strengthen national unity after the civil war. He said the programme has succeeded over the years because of the dedication of corps members. Gowon called on the new generation of youths to keep up the spirit of service and remain ambassadors of peace and progress.
